Bisa Kdei Joins Wizkid For Concert In Togo

Highlife artiste, Bisa Kdei, of Odo Carpenter fame has landed a gig to play at the Marcelo Beach in Lome at a charity music concert being organised by Togolese International football star, Emmanuel Adebayor’s foundation.

The Azonto Ghost hitmaker will join a host of other African artistes such as Nigeria’s Wizkid, Dieudonné Willa from Togo, Nigerian born British artiste, Lola Rae, and Serge Beynaud.

The two day concert which is scheduled for Saturday, June 13-June 14, is expected to draw many music enthusiasts in Togo to the Marcelo Beach. The celebration will continue the next day at the National Stadium.

An elated Bisa Kdei who spoke to Showbiz on Tuesday said that he is grateful for the decision of the organisers to select him out of the many musicians in the country.

He said that even though the language used in his songs could be a barrier, his songs have travelled beyond the shores of the country and one such country which his songs have enjoyed huge following is Togo.

“It shouldn’t be surprising that I was chosen to be at the concert. I have a huge fan base in Lome, not just Lome but Gabon as well. The organisers know that my music is appreciated in Lome and I will use the opportunity to sell Ghana music on the stage,” he stated.

Bisa, whose real name is Ronald Kweku Dei Appiah started his music career as a rapper in a group called BISA (Boys In Serious Action).

He later embarked on a solo project when he found out he could do better in singing. His talent was spotted by a movie producer and that was how Bisa’s success story began in music.

Bisa has done sound tracks for movie producers such as A.A Productions, Paul Gee, Miracle Films and Pat Thomas. However, it was the soundtrack of the movie, Azonto Ghost, that brought him into the limelight.

Since then, he has endeared himself with music lovers with songs such as Metanfo, Over, Madanfo, Love Letter and pimpinaa.

He launched his maiden album, Thanksgiving, in 2013 and won the Song Writer of the Year for his song, Metanfo, at the Ghana Music Awards last year.

'I Will Contest Obour, He Has Failed Musicians' - Ambolley

Despite his failed attempt at the last election, celebrated Ghanaian musician, Gyedu Blay Ambolley says he will again contest the presidency of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) as he can offer better and effective leadership.

In Blay Ambolley’s opinion, the current president, Bice Osei Kufour aka Obour, and his administration has failed and does not deserve another term.

Talking to the Graphic Showbiz last Tuesday in Accra, the Simingwa Man said the current administration had reneged on its promise to seek the welfare of musicians, both active and retired, as well as failed to win the confidence reposed in it when it was given the mandate.

Also, the veteran saxophonist alleges that Obour and his administration has misappropriated the GH¢2 million government gave to the creative arts which landed at MUSIGA.

“Do you know what GH¢2 million can do? It could have changed the fortunes of our musicians, but I can’t see the fruits of that money anywhere because we have poor leadership who also lack vision”, he said.

He said people had been so disappointed that they had called on him to be the alternative. “I will definitely compete again. I will file when nominations open and contest the presidential slot when the MUSIGA elections scheduled for October, this year comes off.

“In fact, I would have no reason not to seek the welfare of my people.
“I have received many calls and it is a sign that people have reposed their confidence in me. Music is my calling and it is God’s gift to me. I cannot disappoint those who believe in me,” he said.

Ambolley whose music career spans over four decades and has travelled widely added “ I’m in a better stead to lead the musicians because I have seen it all in music around the world”.

Asked if his desire to be MUSIGA president was for personal glorification, he replied in the negative saying “ I am passionate about helping to change the fortunes of musicians in Ghana and nothing else.

I have the experience because I was the Vice-President to Ebo Taylor when he was MUSIGA president before I travelled to America. Since I came back about five years ago, I’ve seen the pathetic conditions of some of my colleagues."

“This is what I want to correct. We can’t let those who have sacrificed all their lives to build the music industry die in such conditions. If the right structures are not put in place, I could suffer the same fate,” he said.

Ambolley also revealed he had been contacted by the Obour administration to help steer the affairs of the Union but declined not because he does not have a good relationship with them.

“ I just think the right things must be done first. The problem must be tackled from the roots”, he said.

Touching on the state of the music industry at the moment, Ambolley who says he started rap music in Ghana said that the new crop of artistes are copying too much of foreign music genres.

“ Don’t get me wrong, I am not against that but my only worry is how our highlife music is fast losing its identity.

“I know that music is evolving and the world has become a global village so there will definitely be exchange of cultures. However, we can adopt and still maintain that which identifies us. This is what I have been advocating for. We can copy, yes, but we can change it to suit our style" he added.

“The Indians, Jamaicans, Carribeans and even our brothers in Nigeria have done it so why can’t we do same?” he questioned.

He continued, “It is not about copying others, it is about how you do yours well to appeal to others outside.

Ambolley released his first single in 1973 and has shared on the same stage with some of the world’s renowned artistes.

The multiple award winner launched his 28th album African Soul at the Alliance Francaise in Accra recently.

Ghana Will Legalise Marijuana Soon - Blakk Rasta

Blakk Rasta, a reggae musician and host of Taxi Driver programme on Hitz FM, has said all indication shows Ghana will soon legalise marijuana.

The controversial reggae artiste told host of Starr Drive Bola Ray, Friday, that several countries around the world have started legalising the drug and in just a matter of time Ghana will follow suit.

According to him, marijuana is only harmful when it is abused.

“It is soon going to be legal; in the interim we hide and do it...I know it and I see it coming.

“Every wise country is legalising it now so [we] waiting for Ghana to get wiser... marijuana was created for a reason and if you use marijuana for those reasons then you are alright but if you use marijuana for selfish reasons then certainly you would suffer for that,” Blakk Rasta said.

Marijuana is illegal in Ghana and one can be jailed if caught publicly smoking it. But some countries around the world have legalised the drug.

Uruguay recently became the first country in the world to make it legal to grow, sell and consume marijuana.

Marijuana is also legalised in some states in the United States of America including Washington and Colorado State.

Marijuana is also tolerated in Netherlands though it is still illegal. Possession of small amounts has been decriminalised and the drug can be bought from licensed "coffee shops".

Eazzy in a recent interview has revealed acting is a difficult venture compared to being a musician.

The Burning Love singer recounting her time on Yvonne Nelson’s Single, Married and Complicated set revealed;

“I featured in Yvonne Nelson's Single, Married and Complicated last year and it was amazing to be on set, but I’m not doing that again. It was very good but not again. Acting is one difficult job. One scene which will be edited into just two minutes takes like 2 hours to capture. Being on set for two weeks just to shoot few minutes is too much. I just want to shake my booty, make my money and bounce. But much respect to people who act. You must have passion to be able to do it.”

Eazzy quickly added if the money was right she will be open to feature in another movie.

“But once in a while I will like to act if the money is right.”

BET Should Have Nominated Two Rappers Instead...

Hammer of The Last Two in a recent interview with Doctor Cann on Happy FM’s Showbiz Xtra, has revealed he wished BET would have chosen two rappers instead of a singer and a rapper.

“I wish two rappers were nominated so they could dominate the cypher. It’s not about singing, it’s more about rap. On that note, I pictured two of our best rappers to actually go there and prove to them who we are, but, unfortunately, the BET is broader than rap, so it’s well deserved.

“I don’t know the procedure they used to pick Stonebwoy, but I understand they have committees responsible for choosing the artists so BET reviews and chooses the artiste but in Ghana I’m not sure who is part of the committee, but I know KKD used to be part but I don’t know if he is still part of it.

“It’s not that I don’t agree with the committee that did the choosing, but everyone has their opinion.

“But the fact that it’s BET, two of our rappers could have gone and proved that we have real rappers in Ghana, but a singer and rapper is not the combination I wished for.

“But Stonebwoy is a solid artist and it doesn’t hurt me but I was hoping we would have two rappers there. But our chances are high. Sarkodie is one of the Best things that ever happened to Africa. I think the BET realized that guy is the closest to the Grammy right now.

“If it’s based on votes, then I guess our media men should hype it so people vote but if it’s based on what BET chooses, then I think the decision has already been made and it will be a luxury trip for the boys which they can use network for some collaborations.”

Shatta Wale, Charter House Back In Court On June 5

The case involving dancehall artiste, Shatta Wale and event company, Charter House will continue in court on June 5, 2015.

This was disclosed by the Public Relations Officer (PRO), George Quaye, during an interview on Accra-based Rainbow Radio.

“The case was originally supposed to be back in court on the 22nd May, but it has to be rescheduled since the judicial staff went on their strike, but the road is clear now for the action to continue from this Friday, 5th June,” he noted.

Charter House and its Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Iyiola Ayoade, dragged Shatta Wale to court on October 2, 2014, for defamation.

They said some videos Shatta Wale posted on his Facebook page defamed the company.

Charter House and its CEO are however demanding GH¢10 million in damages from Shatta Wale.

An out of court settlement requested by the dancehall artiste was rejected.

The case has been adjourned for about five times and nothing has since then been heard about it until now.

Shatta Wale had earlier advised Charter House to bury the hatchet and not to take things “too personal.”

“Charterhouse is a mother company that we look up to for the Ghana music awards,” he said on Citi FM’s Traffic Avenue in December 2014.

Rafa Benitez Replaces Carlo Ancelotti

The former Napoli boss replaces Carlo Ancelotti at the Bernabeu after announcing his exit from the Italian side last week
Real Madrid have confirmed that Rafael Benitez is their new coach, replacing the sacked Carlo Ancelotti at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The 55-year-old Spaniard was the overwhelming favourite to be handed the role, and he announced last week that he was to end his two-year stint with Napoli after Sunday's final Serie A game against Lazio.

Madrid vice-president Eduardo Fernandez de Blas then admitted hours before Napoli's 4-2 loss that Benitez would be their next coach, telling a group of club members: "Until three days ago Ancelotti was the best coach in the world, as Jose Mourinho was two years ago and from this week onwards it will be Rafa Benitez."

And on Wednesday, Benitez finally signed a contract with the Blancos which ties him to the Spanish capital until the summer of 2018.

"Real Madrid will present Rafa Benitez as the new coach for the next three seasons on Wednesday, June 3," a club statement read.

"The event will take place at 13:00CET in the Royal Box of the Bernabeu, then Rafa Benitez will appear before the media in the press room."

Benitez takes over at the Bernabeu following the exit of Ancelotti, who was relieved of his duties after failing to win either the Champions League or La Liga in 2014-15.

The ex-Liverpool manager returns to Spain after an absence of 11 years - having previously won two La Liga titles with Valencia in the first half of the last decade.

The Ghana international had been plying his trade at AC Milan but his contract with the Serie A side was set to expire at the end of the month.

"I am very happy that I am here and that I will continue my career with Panathinaikos," Essien told the Greek club's official website on Tuesday.

"I am looking forward to meeting my new team and to winning trophies with my new team-mates.

"I want to give back the love that everyone has shown me and to thank the fans that welcomed me so warmly."

Essien joined Milan from Chelsea in January 2014, after a season-long loan at Real Madrid.

The 32-year-old failed to nail down a regular starting berth during his time at San Siro, making just 20 Serie A appearances in total for the Rossoneri.

Blatter Resigns As Fifa President

The 79-year-old, who has held the post for 17 years, has stepped down in light of the corruption scandal which has blighted the world governing body
Sepp Blatter has announced he will step down as president of Fifa, calling an extraordinary congress "as rapidly as possible" at which a successor will be selected.

The Swiss announced his decision at a hastily-arranged press conference on Tuesday after his secretary-general Jerome Valcke had earlier been implicated in the US Department of Justice's investigations into a $10 million payment to indicted former Fifa vice-president Jack Warner.

"I have thoroughly thought about my presidency and the 40 years Fifa has played in my life. I love Fifa more than anything else and I only want to do the best. I decided to stand again for election for the good of football," he told the gathered media.

"My mandate does not appear to be supported by everybody. This is why I will call an extraordinary meeting.

"I will organise an extraordinary congress for a replacement for me as president. I will not stand. I am now free from the constraints of an election. I will be in a position to focus on profound reforms. For many years we have called for reforms. But these are not sufficient.

"We need a limitation on mandates and terms of office. I have fought for these changes but my efforts have been counteracted."

Blatter has been president since 1998 and was re-elected for a fifth term only four days before his resignation.

However, the Fifa Congress at which he was given that mandate had been preceded by adverse publicity caused by the arrest of seven senior officials at a hotel in Zurich with a total of 14 people then indicted by the US Department of Justice under charges of racketeering, fraud and money laundering.

On the same day, Swiss authorities announced an investigation into corrupt practices by unnamed persons during the bidding process for the hugely controversial 2018 and 2022 World Cups in Russia and Qatar respectively.

Elections to replace Blatter are set to be held between December and March.

Bɛnpaali Film Festival Launched

A festival to give young filmmakers an opportunity to connect and be mentored by seasoned local and international professionals has been launched.

The ‘Bɛnpaali Youngfilmmakers’ festival,’ also seeks to create a single platform for young filmmakers between the ages of 15 and 30 to exhibit their talents.

The festival, which was launched at an impressive ceremony at the Kaya Energy Bar, Cantonments, is being organized by Firebeads Media, in collaboration with the Department of Archaeology & Heritage Studies (School of Arts, College of Humanities, University of Ghana), NAFTI and the United States Embassy.

Speaking at the launch, an executive of Firebeads Media, Dr. Susan Wilcox, told the gathering of artists, academics and others that 'bɛnpaali' (connoting a new dawn in the Buli Language of the Builsa people) is novel in many respects.

She said the three-day festival will create a unique opportunity for young artists to tell stories that otherwise will never be heard.

Dr. Wilcox revealed that the festival opens on June 4, 2015 at the Department of Archaeology & Heritage Studies of the University of Ghana, Legon and will start at 12pm and end 8pm for that day.

Under the guidance of a US filmmaker, Loira Limbal and Prof. Kodzo Gavua of the University of Ghana, selected films entered by young filmmakers between the ages of 15 and 30 under the theme, ‘Stories that Matter,’ will be screened to both local and international audience.

The side attraction will be the screening of the Black Panthers.

The event continues on June 5, 2015 between the hours of 12 and 6:30pm at the same venue.

On June 6, 2015, an award ceremony at NAFTI will climax the festival.

At the launch of the festival, a 12-minute short drama about teenagers coming of age was shown to set the tone for the event.

Dr. Wilcox said the film was an example of what young people elsewhere in the world are doing.

bɛnpaali paintings donated by Musah Swalah and Dele, were auctioned to raise money to support the festival.

The high point of the event was performances by silky voice, award winning artiste, Efya and poet, Chief Moomen.

Efya serenaded the audience with her voice in the rainy evening on the lush gardens of the Kaya Bar.

Present at the launch were Prof. Gavua, Prof. Akosua Adomako, Prof. Benjamin Kankpenyeng, and Prof. Caesar Apentik as well as lecturers and officials from NAFTI and the US Embassy.

Rebecca Oheneasah Hesse, an executive of Firebeads Media, said, the festival will “Connect emerging artists with those that are more seasoned from both Ghana and the United States. Through presentations and in workshops youth will learn and receive coaching from key resource people having expertise in various aspects of the industry.”

She encouraged young enthusiastic filmmakers to take advantage of the opportunity being provided and register for free by emailing benpaali@gmail.com.

Ambolley criticizes Stonebwoy (@stonebwoyb) BET nomination

Veteran Ghanaian musician Gyedu Blay Ambolley has expressed worry about authentic Ghanaian music not receiving nominations at international awards ceremonies.

Citing the annual Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards as an example, the musician said the organisers, during nominations, totally ignore highlife, the authentic music genre from Ghana, a situation he finds unacceptable.

He wondered how Stonebwoy got nominated for the Best International Act (Africa) category of this year’s, ceremony for a music genre that is completely alien to Ghanaian music.

Speaking in an interview with Hitz Entertainment News, the ‘Simgwa’ act said “that’s what they see coming out of Ghana so they go by it, nobody has really tried to sit down to put in an experiment to know what it is …because if you talk about Stonebwoy the raps are all the “patois” style. [It] is just like copying the dancehall thing from Jamaica, the beat is still the same format so if he’s going to be nominated out of adapting and copying well then I don’t know what is wrong because if you take highlife, highlife is the tree [of] dancehall, hiplife and all the rest are just branches of that tree but don’t forget at a point in time all the branches fall but the tree still stands”.

Mr Ambolley hammered on the fact that the youth in the music industry have lost their identity as Ghanaians.

When he was asked what exactly the identity was he said “every country has its own identity musically and they stay true to their music. The kids that have come, they are adapting, they are coping [and] they are not learning so how am I going to turn it around for it to become mine…”

“If it’s “patois” they go the same way and the kids cheer them on because most of these DJs are young guys who didn’t come to meet that highlife element. What they met is the “Dancehall” and others so they think that’s what it is”.

M.anifest (@manifestive) Is Underrated Says Obrafour (@iamobrafour)

Obrafour was on #RyseNShyne with Akosua Hanson to promote his new songs Pimpinaa and Twe Mame with Bisa KDei and Lousika respectively.

The rap icon among other things talked about the rapper he recorded No Shorcut to Heaven and Odasani with saying;

"M.anifest, that young man, for me I think he is one of the biggest acts in the country but he is underrated. Well, it’s a Ghanaian thing, we don’t give respect where it's due. But for me that man is deep. So deep… I believe when given the opportunity he will take us to places."

On making a body of work that will surpass his Pae Mu Ka album he said;

"You see, I know it will be difficult to match or undo Pae Mu Ka album but I believe since I made it I can topple that album with a new creation."
