Ghanaian Dancehall Music Is Dead - Blakk Rasta (@Blakkrasta)

Controversial Ghanaian reggae artiste and host of Taxi Driver on Hitz FM, Abubakar Ahmed known in showbiz as Blakk Rasta says dancehall is dead and he will be shocked if the music genre achieves what it did back in 2014, this year.

The opinionated musician said this on Hitz Entertainment News while denouncing reports that he said dancehall artiste Shatta Wale will not go anywhere in a recent interview on ETV.
Clearing the air, Blakk Rasta said, “I did not go out to say Shatta Wale’s music will not go anywhere, he (the interviewer) asked me about Ghanaian dancehall so [my answer] was a general description and prediction of the dancehall scene in Ghana”.

According to him, “the interviewer then zeroed in and asked me about some artists like Stonebwoy, Samini, Shatta Wale and I talked about all these artistes one after the other but the writer decided to pick only Shatta Wale and put him up there and say Blakk Rasta said it.  What about Samini, what about Stonebwoy?”.

On his opinion on dancehall music, he said, “If dancehall is able to do what it did in 2014, I’ll be shocked because for me dancehall is dead”.

“I travel out and I don’t hear Ghanaian music. It’s full of hype and they are not letting the music talk they are doing the talking and the hype. They talk about the richest Ghanaian artistes and the most flamboyant Ghanaian video, all this won’t take us anywhere, the way they are doing it, it won’t last”.

The ‘Barrack Obama’ hit singer stressed that, “It’s true that Ghanaian dancehall music will not go anywhere, it’s all about Patois. If you don’t speak Patois, you can’t do dancehall that’s what I’m saying will not go anywhere.”

He advised that dancehall artistes sing in other dialects instead and refrain from using profane words.

“It won’t work unless a few of them decide to be a little bit more conscious, sing in the local dialects apart from Patois and refrain from using profane words.”

“The music won’t go anywhere if we all sing profane dancehall. Why don’t they sing about ‘Dumsor’, why don’t they sing about how pretty African women are, why don’t they sing about the African continent, why don’t they sing about the suffering of the ghetto, why don’t they sing about prosperity, sing about love rather than the guns and that they killed 20 people? There are so many things we can talk about which will uplift and develop us rather than this nonsense which is presently going on,” he continued.

“It’s just a suggestion, it’s just an opinion, if you want your business to last this is what you may have to do,” Blakk Rasta added.

VGMA 2015 Nominees List To Be Released On February 27

The journey to music’s biggest night in Ghana, began with a call for nominations which was answered by musicians from all genres and this paved the way for the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards(VGMA) Board to commence sitting.

The Board had the tortuous task of reviewing hundreds of entries, categorizing and shortlisting them into the various categories to be awarded. After many hours of board deliberations and numerous sittings, the 2015 VGMA Board has completed its work and it’s ready to make public, the nominees list for this year’s event.

The excitement and anxiety is building up, the wait and the guess work of who will be nominated for what and who will miss the train would be over in a few days. The event is set to take place at the plush La Palm Royal Beach Hotel this Friday 27th February.

The event, strictly by invitation, is a preview of what to expect at the main event in terms of organization and it will be attended by a tall list of A-List guests who will comprise of the crème de la crème in the entertainment industry, artistes and some hundred fans of VGMA selected from various VGMA social media activation.

The theme for this year’s VGMAs is ‘IGNITED BY PASSION’ which seeks to celebrate the passion and love of the Event by the 25million music fans in Ghana who have remained faithful to the scheme over the past sixteen years. This will be done by involving them fully in all aspects of the Festival’s activities starting from the launch and right through to the main awards night. Selection will be mainly done via social media.

This year’s event has seen some major changes already, the inclusion of a Reggae/ Dancehall Artiste of the year and the re-definition of the New Artiste of the year as well as Music Video Directing categories. Organizers maintain that these changes have been made based on a general review of the scheme consistent with its mantra of keeping the scheme fresh and in synch with current trends.

According to the organisers, Charterhouse, this year’s launch is a combined launch and Nominees Party and if previous launches are anything to go by, one can expect a classy red carpet event which will preceded the actual program, a well decorated walk way to the event grounds on the theme, ignited by passion, lots of paparazzi, socialization and partying with stars. The event is expected to be on full of glitz and glamour.

The road to the most anticipated event on the GH entertainment calendar would be cleared in a few days, we may not know who will get cut or who will be nominated for what at this moment but one thing is for certain, the controversy over who should have been nominated and who shouldn't have been will begin soon after the list of nominees list is released.

However, in the midst of all the controversies don’t forget to vote for your favorite artistes should they make the cut.

The 16th Vodafone Ghana Music Awards is a Charterhouse Ghana event, sponsored by Vodafone Ghana, supported by STAR and GHOne TV, Ignited by Passion and Powered by 25 million Fans.

8 Ghanaian Female Celebrities With Kids But No Fathers…

1. Jackie Appiah

Star actress-Jackie Appiah’s child-Damien was not born out of wedlock but the breakdown of her marriage to Peter Agyeman has made her a single mother—juggling her acting career with motherhood.

She seems to have done well as her career has not really suffered. We guess when you can afford a Nanny or pay family and friends to help, it surely doesn’t matter if you are a single parent or not…

2. Joselyn Dumas

When it comes to Joselyn Dumas and her daughter, the story is a little different. Some claim she had her child while not married but the actress is known for saying, she was once married and that was when she had her child. Unlike Jackie Appiah who had her child while in the limelight, Joselyn Dumas came into showbiz as a mother—a situation she has perfectly managed. She has tried to keep her daughter away from the cameras but trust the media to occasionally fetch her out.

3. Juliet Ibrahim

We were here to see actress-Juliet Ibrahim get married, have a baby and then getting divorce—all within a space of less than 5 years. The collapse of her marriage some few years ago has made her a single mother. We are told Juliet Ibrahim’s son spends a lot of time with Juliet’s mother and as such, the actress’ career stands unaffected by her single parent status. But in the ‘men department’, she seems to be running out of luck; a situation some blame on being a single mother.

4. Nana Aba Anamoah
When it comes to Nana Aba Anamoah, she has a long story behind being a single mother. According to the TV personality, she got pregnant as a teenager and though abortion was the reasonable option then, she decided to opt for being a teenage mother. Today, she is a proud single mother—so she claims. She spent some years dating the CEO of Unique Trust-Prince Kofi Amoateng until Ghanaian musician-Mzbel allegedly took over.

 5. Afia Schwarzenegger

Afia Schwarzenegger is a single mother whose kids (twin) are mostly taken care of by her mother when she is at work or when on a frolic of her own—heavily drinking and smoking. Afia claims she was once married in South Africa and her children were born out of the marriage. Others have said, the two children were born out of ‘prostitution’, an allegation Afia Schwarzenegger has not really denied.

6. Nana Ekua Amoah  (Mzbel)

Two years ago Mzbel made headlines as many wondered who the father of her son, a cute baby she named-Aaron is. According to publications by GhanaCelebrities.Com, the CEO of Unique Trust-Prince Kofi Amoateng is a close fatherly candidate for Mzbel’s son—because the child was conceived when the two were dating. Mzbel has failed to openly mention the name of her son’s father—and the above ‘suspected’ person has never commented on this.

7. Tiffany Hayden (Itz Tiffany)

Ghanaian musician-Itz Tiffany and her baby father were in the news some few months ago—but they were not battling over child support or anything, rather over leaked ‘seks’ tapes of the rapper. Though Itz Tiffany is our celebrity single mother, her child is currently with the father whose parents were granted full custody by a UK Court some few years ago.Today, Itz Tiffany goes about her career as though she has no child but she surely has been losing sleep over the child not being with her—at least that is what she said some few months ago.

8. Nadia Buari

Actress-Nadia Buari is the last on our list for the obvious reason that even though she has somewhat denied having a child, Chris-Vincent Agyapong Febiri (Editor, GhanaCelebrities.Com) and several others in the know insist the actress has a child which she is completely hiding. Apparently, Nadia Buari had her child when she was a teen—and that was way before she started appearing on our screens as an actress. Her most successful relationship was with Ghanaian footballer-Michael Essien and many say the relationship broke down because of her ‘born one’ status—which she initially kept a secret from the footballer.

I Am Not Dating A Nigerian Businessman - Yvonne Okoro

Actress, Entrepreneur and TV Presenter Yvonne Chinyere Okoro Okereke has denied speculations that she is getting married to a Nigerian, Igbo businessman from Abia State.

In the last quarter of 2014 and early 2015,  there were rumours that the actress was set to marry a businessman from Nigeria which she denied, but media bloggers have insisted that the marriage plans are still ongoing.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Doreen Avio on Hitz Entertainment news Thursday, the actress said she finds the news funny and that she has no idea how the rumour started.
She said she has never informed anyone about who she is dating.

When asked if she was indeed dating a Nigerian businessman, the actress was quick to say she was not going to discuss her private life with anyone because it is not for public consumption.

She continued that “if my supposed boyfriend is somewhere listening, this will put enough pressure on him to come forward and propose marriage.”

The “Contract” actress however said she used to feel sad when negative stories and rumours about her come up in the media circles but now she says it doesn’t affect her like before. Yvonne says she rather chooses to speak about it or ignore it.

Yvonne says she doesn’t want to disclose her plans for 2015 because she is unable to fulfill them when she talks about them. She however asked Ghanaians to keep their fingers crossed.
Yvonne Okoro’s movie, Contract, won the best movie award, and also won the best script and best video honors at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards in 2014.

Islam Influenced My Music—Asa

One of the respected Nigerian singers, Bukola Elemide, well known as Asa, has said her Muslim background influenced her music.

She made this disclosure in a recent interview with My Africa Podcast.
According to her, she was a Muslim for about two to three years when she lived with her grandparents who practised the religion. Asa explained that she converted to Christianity when she was in the high school.

“I come from a Muslim background, and I actually had a stint with Islam. I was a Muslim for about two years or three years. I was a Muslim after high school because I lived with my grandparents. My grandparents were Muslims from Lagos Island, and yes it did influence the way I see things and the way I write,” the world respected artiste said.

Asa further said, “It (Islam) influenced the song ‘Awé’. You see just near where I used to live, there was a mosque, and we had a munedžim who calls out prayers. He would early morning by 5 O’clock, ‘Allaaaah’. That was amazing, It just inspired ‘Away’, so yeah, Islam, Christianity is always going to be part of my history.”

MzVee And I Have Good Chemistry – Stonebwoy

Ghanaian Afro Pop, Dancehall and Reggae artiste, Stonebwoy has denied rumours that he is in a relationship his fellow dancehall artiste MzVee.

He said he and the lovely musician are just able to bring their creativity to bear when they team up for a project and that their relationship is purely business.

Speaking on Hitz FM’s entertainment news, the award winning artiste said “there is good chemistry between me and MzVee when it comes to music.”

Stonebwoy added that people loved the synergy between him and MzVee when they collaborated on her hit single “natural girl” and that was informing the assumption that something more was happening between them.

He said “our relationship is strictly a friendly one and this is our second song together”.

When asked why he preferred using the Hausa language in his songs, Stonebwoy said it was his way of attracting his fans who speak the language, especially Muslims.

Stonebwoy who is also the CEO of Burniton Music Group and known in real life as Livingstone Etse Satekla said he is impressed with the kind of following he has from the Muslim community and hopes to leverage on that to increase his fan base.

“I’m an artiste who wants to make sure people from all walks of life have a bit of everything language wise and it is a tactical way to widen my fan base”.

Stonebwoy has increasingly gained prominence in the Ghanaian music circles.

His second studio album “Necessary Evil” containing 29 tracks was launched on November 22, 2014 and is already enjoying massive air play. It has also been made accessible on iTunes.

'Women Are Disturbing Me A Lot' - Kpa kpa kpa Man Cries

Mohammed Ayeetey Okwabei, the man behind the famous term ‘Kpa Kpa kpa’ says women have been "disturbing" him since he gained popularity after his video went viral.

He made this known on Hitz FM’s entertainment show.

Mohammed said, “Initially, the women were not so fond of me, but now it seems like the way the fame started to come, I stay away, I’m just seeing the women like that”.

Asked how fame was treating him, the unemployed father of five said, “In my community I can’t even come out because everybody was expecting that once Glo and almost everybody was using my 'kpa kpa kpa' term for their jingles, I have to get money from it but Kpa kpa kpa man is walking in Kotobabi with nothing.

“I don’t have a manager. And so it is my bosom friend Faruk Dumsson who is about to manage me right now, he had to take me through certain processes before I can make use of my fame."

He added: “But a lot of people are saying that I didn’t register ‘kpa kpa kpa’. Who is the originator of the term ‘Kpa kpa kpa’? The original ‘kpa kpa kpa’ is here and you are telling me ‘nek3 ke nek3’. Who is the man in the video? You’ll be sitting there telling me it was Ayitey Powers who brought ‘kpa kpa kpa’, why should you do that?"

The James Town resident confirmed that he was given a hamper, GHC 160.00, and was later taken to a Glo office for a deal before realizing everything was in the public domain.

Mohammed said the timing for the hamper which was December 16, 2014 was very convenient because of the Christmas season but that should not give anyone the idea that he is ignorant and therefore can be enticed with a bag of rice.

Explaining the term ‘kpa kpa kpa’, Mohammed said’ “I’m told it’s a term used in the northern part of Ghana. But I didn’t know about it until I came out with the term. But kpa kpa kpa means being smart with your movement to survive” he said.

The term ‘Kpa Kpa Kpa’ went viral late last year when Mohammed granted an interview to Joy News to express his thoughts on the Ghanaian economy. The term has subsequently been used by musicians, politicians and companies in one way or the other.

Dancehall King At Last

Perhaps, there has not been any awards scheme in Ghana that has been a listening one as the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA). Indeed one of the reasons why the VGMA has managed to remain relevant over the years has been its ability to adapt to changes.

Based on the feedback and advice from industry players and the general public, VGMA has made a few changes to this year’s edition of the awards.

A release from the organisers indicate that in recognition of the continually emerging new genres on the music scene, the board has finally succumbed to the desire of fans and created a category for Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year.

This is one music genre that has undoubtedly become a favourite of many musicians and patrons. Previously, Reggae/Dancehall only had one place in the category of awards, which was the Reggae/Dancehall Song of the Year.

The new category definition, according to the organisers, reads, “The Reggae/Dancehall Artiste(s) of the Year is the Artiste(s) adjudged by the Academy, Board and the General Public as the Artiste(s) with the highest audience appeal and popularity in the Reggae/Dancehall genre. The Artiste(s) must have released a hit single/album in the year under review.

This category is expected to be one of the most fiercely contested this year with artistes such as Stonebwoy, Samini, MzVee, Kaakie, Blakk Rasta, etc being tipped to be top contenders for this award. It is not certain who will emerge as the first Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the year but one thing is certain, it’s going to be an interesting wait till April,11, 2015 when the final awards event comes off.

Another major change that has occurred is in the New Artiste of the Year category. This award, which recognises new and budding talent in the music industry is usually very keenly contested and as a result generates a lot of controversy as to who is actually a new artiste.

One can recall the story of Kumi Guitar who many thought did not deserve to be nominated as a new artiste in the 2014 edition of the VGMA’s. To minimize the usual controversy that surrounds this award the category has been re-defined to capture the very meaning of “new” in relation to the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

The new category definition now reads, “The New Artiste of the Year is the Artiste(s) adjudged by the Academy, Board and the General Public as the most promising and talented emerging artiste(s). The award goes to a relatively new artiste(s) who released a single/album that FIRST shot the artiste (s) into the public limelight in the year under review.

Joselyn Dumas Opens Up

Popular Ghanaian actress and TV host Joselyn Dumas has said she finds her acting in Shirley Frimpong Manso’s movie, A Sting In A Tale, her worst performance ever and has explained she was a novice actress at that time.

Though director Shirley Frimpong Manso okayed Joselyn’s performance in the movie, the curvy actress said she was not impressed.

“Nobody remembers me in A Sting In A Tale. But everybody remembers me in Perfect Picture, though I was in it for just five minutes. It was cameo but people remembered me in it. I think I had 15 scenes in A Sting In A Tale but nobody remembers me. From the director’s point of view, it was good but I don’t think I did well. If I had gotten complacent, like today I won’t be getting nomination for the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards.”

Joselyn Dumas said this when she opened up on her acting career, producing her own movie, her childhood dream and her recent nomination for the upcoming Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCAs).

How did you start acting?

I stumbled on movies through Shirley Frimpong Manso’s Sparrow Productions. I did my first production with her; it was cameo role for Perfect Picture and then she called me back for A Sting In A Tale which I performed poorly. I think I wasn’t too serious at the time because at the time television had always been my first time love and movies… So I think that I needed to dedicate more time to the craft and I did that obviously. I had a lot of help from Ken Attoh, Shirley herself and Lydia Laryea from Sparrow Productions.

They were really urging me on to pursue it and so I got a call again from Shirley after a lot of persuasion from Lydia and Ken Attoh to put me in Adam’s Apples. She wasn’t sure; my auditions didn’t go too well so I had to audition several times. And then the last time, she had to get KSM on the panel to judge my performance and it went well so she gave me the very controversial Jennifer Adams character. And obviously at the time, I thought like Shirley had given me a few chances and I didn’t take it too seriously so I really wanted to prove myself. At the time I thought I couldn’t even do it but if you put your mind to something and you work hard at it, you can be anything you want to be. So I sort of called Shirley a lot, discussing the character, tearing her apart, trying to understand Jennifer Adams character. When we started filming, everything else was history. They couldn’t even separate me from the ‘Jennifer Adams’ because I had people thinking that I was rude. Yes, I did well. Alongside that, I have been doing my television show. I got a few opportunities to go abroad to feature in movies but I couldn’t because of the nature of the job I had on television full time. So it was a matter of deciding. Being a continual control of my craft, I decided it was better I did pre-recorded shows, put them down then I can travel and do other things as well. That being said, I sort of started doing more movies because I don’t do ‘The One Show’ anymore so there was a bit of more time.

What’s your dream role?

The thing is, I am yet to play roles that I have been dreaming about. I mean—that word I can never say it—schizophrenic. I wanted to play that role like last week. I just like the multiple personalities, and it’s quite challenging. I am doing my new challenging role now in a movie by Pascal. There is a lot of fight scenes in the movie and is more like there is more gun fights and more actions. I am quite excited about that. Schizophrenic and being wicked villain are my dream roles.

Was acting Joselyn’s childhood dream?

I wanted to be a pilot. I had an uncle who was a pilot—Uncle Frank Opare. I thought he was the smartest person on earth. I got an opportunity to do a bit of the flying lessons in Arizona but I chickened out; I don’t know why. Plus, the money was too huge. It was a lot of money. I realised it didn’t take so much to become a pilot. You just have to pay for the lessons really and get the hours in. Obviously the theory aspect of it comes but the main thing is, you need to put in the hours. But I wanted to be a pilot, believe it or not.

You are now into producing aside acting?

I wanted to do a production so I spoke to Shirley and she said she had a script, we can do it together. So she wrote the script and I read it and I thought it was so heavy but then my most challenging role yet, which was Love or Something Like That. And my character was an emotional wreck and I am quite a happy-go-lucky person so with those roles, I think I am able to sort of play it. But this one was more like I had to really go inside of myself and sort of find that dark place and stay there throughout the entire production. I co-produced Love or Something Like That. That’s my second production. I did V Republic with her. It’s also my production. So, yeah, I am so glad. It took a lot of work shooting Love or Something Like That. Senanu Gbedawu had to like always bring me back because I have the tendency of being that happy-go-lucky person that I am on set. I tried to keep everybody happy; I am the clown on set all the time but I had to be very…you know.

Love or Something Like That got you a nomination for AMVCAs.

When the nominations came and I got nominated for Best Lead Actress at AMVCAs, I was shocked. I was very happy. I felt the hard work has paid off. The nomination alone, for me, is like wow. Obviously Ghana Movie Awards also came along and I won Best Actress. I didn’t expect it; I wasn’t even in town. The best is yet to come. I now have a bit more time to do more movies.

Do you think Ghana has chances of winning at AMVCAs?

I think we are going to bring a lot of awards back home but I think we need support, support, support.

What do you have to tell the fans to vote for you since it’s public vote award?

I think Africans in general we support our own. Wherever you find yourself, whether in Kenya, Somalia etc, we gravitate towards each other automatically because we sort of have that sense of identity and belonging when we see each other. But when it comes to the AMVCAs, it is a tough one because… I think we need to submit more movies as Ghana so we can have more nominees when it comes to these awards. It is there to encourage us. For me, I don’t want to use the word ‘validation’, but it almost tells you that you know whatever you are doing, regardless how small you may think it is or the corner you are in, somebody is watching you and somebody is acknowledging the fact that you are working hard. So if that somebody decides to give me nomination, how much more my people. We need to rally behind all of us nominated as Ghanaians to vote for us. P-Square is P-Square because of what Nigerians said about them. Dbanj is Dbanj because Nigerians promoted them. It took the PR of the regular people to take their names as far as it can get. So we are where we are because of the fans. I wouldn’t be Joselyn Dumas if I didn’t have fans. If it wasn’t for them like nobody knows I even exist. And there is somebody out there who is probably better than me but they don’t have the fan base that I do. So I thank God for them. So we can use that to bring all the awards home because if you look at the nominations its more Nigerian. My category like this had only me as a Ghanaian, so are Shirley and Adjetey. The thing is, we are doing amazing stuff in Ghana. When I say amazing, when you look at the budget and the kind of movies we churn out, it is just amazing. Quality photography, quality actors, quality directors, but we need to make a lot more noise and we can start with AMVCAs.

Shirley Frimpong Manso's "Grey Dawn" Record Massive Turn Out

Grey Dawn, the latest movie from award-winning television and movie company, Sparrow Productions, got a full house at the movie's premiere on February 13, 2015 at the Silverbird Cinema in Accra.

The movie, directed by multiple award-winning film producer and director, Shirley Frimpong-Manso, and produced by Ken Attoh, had a multi-national cast from Ghana, Nigeria and Gabon.

The movie tells the story of a government minister, Harold, played by Nollywood’s Manuel Bimbo, and wife, played by Nigerian Funlola Aofiyebi-Raimi.

The minister had to choose between using his position to help his father-in-law, Kweku Yanka (played by veteran Ghanaian actor, Kofi Middleton Mends), stay out of jail for tax evasion or allow the law to take its course.

His wife apparently had an affair with an artist (Jacques) played by Gabonese actor Marlon Mave who was also dating the minister's daughter and art student played by Ghanaian new kid on the block, Sika Osei.

The seats in the Cinema Hall were virtually filled with movie lovers who applauded and sighed at the diverse scenes in the two-hour movie.

The highest point of reaction from the audience was when the minister's wife was caught in between a rejection by the artist boyfriend and her suspicious husband walking in on her extra marital affair after trailing her to the artist's house.

The accidental killing of the artist by the minister's wife and the cover up by the minister to protect and restore his family is the new twist Shirley Frimpong-Manso adds to 'Grey Dawn' to portray the "real and complicated situations people face in our society".

"This is our way of telling stories and it is very African because a lot of people live with complicated scenarios at home and we wanted to bring the story close to home as possible," Shirley said on the Red Carpet event for the movie after the premiere.

Shirley Frimpong-Manso said the biggest challenge they faced was finding the Jacques character played by Marlon Mave. "We took for granted that there are a lot of French African actors around. We advertised a lot and did a lot of auditions until we met Marlon from Gabon who was great".

In an interview with GhanaWeb, Gabonese French speaking actor Marlon Mave said he studied English for four years to prepare for such roles with big African actors. "It was an honour to work with Shirley Frimpong-Manso who is one of the biggest directors in Africa".

"This project was a new experience for me and I was very happy about it because I was accepted well in Ghana. I was really prepared to work with Shirley. I even learned to paint for this role," Marlon Mave said.

Always-smiling television star and newbie to the movie industry in Ghana, Sika Osei, played her role remarkably well as the daughter of the minister and an art seller who fell in love with Jacques, her mother's boyfriend.

Sika expressed delight for securing the role and wished to work more with Shirley to gain all the necessary experience to build her career in the growing movie industry.

The movie 'Grey Dawn' is still showing at the Silverbird Cinemas in Accra and will subsequently premiere at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology.

I’m Making A Statement With My Movie -Shirley Frimpong Manso

Ace movie director Shirley Frimpong Manso has said her upcoming project, Grey Dawn, is not just meant to entertain and tell a story but also to make a couple of strong statements to draw attention to some pertinent issues bothering society.

Shirley said one of her biggest statements she intends to make with the movie is the fact that “family is important.”

“The other statement is also about how important the family is. Sometimes you have to get your hands dirty to protect your family.

“Another statement is also about women and how much we give up….and then generally the society. You know politics and where it can take you and how it drives you and how you try to cover up things to please people when in fact your house is falling apart,” Shirley said at the movie’s media preview on Tuesday.

Grey Dawn is produced by Ken Attoh and directed by Shirley and is expected to open for the public and movie fans on Friday, February 13 at the Silverbird Cinemas, Accra Mall.
It will subsequently premiere at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology.

It tells the story of a government minister, Harold, played by Nollywood’s Manuel Bimbo, who must choose between using his position to help his father-in-law, Kweku Yanka (Kofi Middleton Mends), stay out of jail for tax evasion or allow the law to take its course.
His decision sets in motion a chain of events which lure him into committing the one sin that will haunt him for the rest of his life.

The CEO of Sparrow Production has said family comes first for some persons in society, if not the majority. They could go any extra mile to do things, even out of the remits of the law, just to protect their families and that she explored that in the upcoming movie.
Grey Dawn features popular actors Bimbo Manuel, Funlola Aofiyebi-Raimi, Kofi Middleton Mends, Marlon Mave and a host of others, including new entrant Sika Osei.

Shirley said the script was written some five (5) years ago but her production decided to shoot it now.
