Yes,
it appears Africans are getting fed up with the glorification of ‘light
skins’, which had caused many of our people to turn to bleaching and
toning.
In Ghana, Yvonne Nelson is often ridiculed and accused
on social media for lightening her skin. We even have the likes of Ama
K. Abebrese, Nana Ama McBrown and others starting an intense campaign
against skin bleaching and toning.
A similar campaign has been
started in Nigeria with some big names supporting it. It is not
surprising therefore that Wizkid received a lot of bashing when he
posted images from his new video shoot in Miami on Instagram:
Star
Boy is currently in Miami, Florida to shoot a new music video. The
24-year-old star posted photos and video clips on his official Instagram
page and his followers are going in on him for not featuring dark
skinned girls but Latino ladies.
In July, Nollywood starlet
Beverly Naya wrote an inspiring article for BN on loving your skin. That
was the first step in the campaign. #FiftyShadesOfBlack.
The
campaign is created to inspire not only women but as many young black
girls as possible because they deserve to have a chance of realizing and
cherishing their beauty before someone leads them to believe otherwise.
Beverly
brought some of the fresh and leading ladies in the entertainment
industry music, beauty, fashion and acting to help take part in the
inspiring campaign. |
